Hornell's old Post Office is a 10,000 square foot building in Western NY - a raw warehouse space retaining some character-defining features from its days as a large regional post office and mail sorting facility. In the 50 years before its construction, the population of Hornell NY had tripled and the demands on the postal service necessitated the construction of a large new facility. The post office was completed and opened and 1916 and served the area until the late 1950's, when the building was vacated for a smaller, more efficient space.
Since the building was saved from neglect and possible demolition in the late-1990's, it has undergone strategic and continual renovation, beginning with a series of projects in the early 2000's to stabilize the building and prevent further deterioration. In 1998 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. After extensive removal of poorly-conceived alterations from the early 1960's, the building is a set of stripped-down, minimalist spaces with original details that recall its past use.
